I read this article for my Anthropology of Gender class, and really enjoyed it, so I uploaded it for tumblr to have too. The article deals with how physicians decide and “construct” gender in cases of intersex infants with genital ambiguity. Their decisions regarding assigning (or “uncovering”) the gender of a child is influenced just as much by cultural factors as they are by medical ones. Overall, the article allows us to question the idea of what is “natural” (from our western perspective), how language perpetuates our views of what’s natural, and what we can do to perhaps change these preconceptions.
Definitely encourage anyone with some spare time to give it a read.
